Case study: Please Politician

Film: 'Please Politician'
In a disused Swindon office space, we created this 3-minute pro-voting video for the 2015 UK general election. It was a collaborative effort with freelancers from Swindon Independent Film-makers and Swindon Film-makers Network. Our aim was to increase voter engagement, and to help voters articulate their yearning for renewed political trust. Our short film dramatises voter concern, and has generated interest at BBC radio, local press and parliament itself. It was a 3-day shoot, 3-day edit and roughly 5 days' pre-production. We were lucky to attract the technical and creative talents of the region's finest.

The challenge

The 2015 general election offered a big change moment for us all. When we were filming, there was considerable press speculation about a new political landscape, a parliament further divided, and the loss of political trust. We wanted to record and share voter concerns, to stimulate national debate.

Our task

Our goal was to reach conventional media, and Youtube and Facebook audiences and engage them in debate.

How we helped

We drafted a script and ran it past scores of people for criticism and ideas. After 4 drafts, the leaders of all the main parties at Swindon Borough Council approved the script. We then recruited a crew of 9 volunteer technicians including BBC freelancers and professionals, and invited actors and non-actors alike to perform parts of the script in two separate shoots - one in a makeshift mobile studio, and one in a disused office. Lastly, with the help of CGI, editors and sound pros, we pulled together the final piece.

Outcomes

We were delighted by the response from press and parliament - but even more so from the public. Debate still rumbles on at www.Youtube.com and www.Facebook.com
